Gas considered likely culprit in explosion that destroys home

Authorities say a gas leak probably caused an explosion that was so violent it leveled a house and lifted the home's concrete foundation out of the ground.

No one was hurt in the explosion, which happened just after 3:30 p.m. Friday.

Clarksdale Police Chief Greg Hoskins said it appeared to be caused by natural gas.

No one was home at the time of the blast. According to Hoskins, debris from the house was scattered across the street and the contents of the house, including a mattress, were blown into surrounding trees.

Surrounding houses also sustained heavy damage.

Dramatic pictures from the scene showed the extent of the damage.
