Man indicted for Ole Miss sprinter death

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) - A Lafayette County grand jury has indicted a Picayune man with capital murder in the shooting death of a University of Mississippi sprinter.

Records in the circuit clerk's office show the indictment was handed down December 7th and was filed Wednesday.

Christian Bonner was indicted for shooting and killing Rodney Lydale Lockhart on September 28th during a robbery.

Twenty-year-old Bonner has been held at the county jail since his arrest on October 5th.

Authorities have said that Bonner knew Lockhart.

Lockhart, who was also 20, was a junior from Vaiden who majored in psychology and was a member of the men's track team. He was a member of the U.S. track team that won gold in the 4x400-meter relay at World Junior Championships in Beijing last year.

Lockhart's body was found in his apartment. An autopsy showed he died from a single gunshot wound to the head.

No trial date has been set for Bonner.

If convicted, he could be sentenced to death.
