Memphis man pleads guilty to forcing juveniles into prostitution

The Department of Justice announced Thursday that Juan Mendez has pled guilty to two counts of commercial sex trafficking.

Mendez admitted to providing two juvenile girls to engage in commercial sex acts knowing that force, fraud and coercion had been used.

At his plea hearing, Mendez admitted that he knew both victims were juveniles and were lured into the Unites States under false pretenses believing they were going to be restaurant workers. They were then prostituted to brothels in both Memphis and Nashville.

"The victims in this case were children thrust into the brutal and demeaning world of human trafficking; they were fed lies, and treated as modern day slaves," Grace Chung Becker of the Civil Rights Division of the Attorney General's office said.

Mendez stands the chance of being sentenced to a life in prison. A sentencing date has been set for June 19th.
