Fights break out at Northside, Hamilton High

Action News 5 cameras were rolling as a fight broke out Friday afternoon on the campus of Northside High School.

Students said the people involved in the fight were friends and relatives of people involved in a similar altercation Thursday.

Witnesses said tensions were high at the school all day Friday.  At one point, witnesses said, students were told people found wandering in the halls would be suspended.

As school let out, sources told Action News 5, Memphis Police were near the Northside High School campus because of a threat of retaliation after the fight Thursday.  The fight started shortly after police moved on.

"It was like they waited until police left," student Monica Flynn said.

The fight that broke out lasted only a few seconds, but Flynn said safety is always a concern.

"My safety is in danger," she said. "I do think about it.  So they need to quit it."

Flynn said most students were happy it was Friday, and hoped tensions would calm over the weekend.

As the fight broke out at Northside, a similar altercation was playing out at Hamilton High School.  Police at the scene would not comment, but took several people into custody.

Memphis City Schools released the following statement about the fight at Hamilton High School:

"Memphis City Schools Security will work with the Memphis Police Department to pursue charges against trespassers present at Hamilton High School after dismissal today. We are aware that some arrests were made, and we will certainly take swift and appropriate disciplinary action if any Hamilton students are determined to be responsible."
