Memphis Police officer shoots carjacking suspect

A Memphis Police officer shot a carjacking suspect early Sunday morning after the man turned a gun on him, investigators said.

Officials said the carjacking occurred just before 2:00 a.m. Sunday outside New Club 5000 in the 1300 block of airways.  There, investigators said, the suspect forced the victim to give up the keys to his Lincoln Towncar.  Shots were fired, but no injuries were reported.  The victim said he last saw the suspect driving south on Airways.

Just after 2:00 a.m., a Memphis Police officer located the stolen car and alerted other officers.  After a brief pursuit, the suspect ditched the car in the 1800 block of Frisco and ran away.  When an officer ordered the suspect to stop, the man turned on him with a handgun.  The officer shot the suspect and took him into custody.

Police said the suspect was taken by ambulance to the Regional Medical Center in Memphis, where he was listed in stable condition.
