Hernando sewer improvements save nearly $500,000

HERNANDO, Miss. (AP) - Officials say recent improvements in Hernando by DeSoto's countywide sewer authority have saved nearly $500,000.

As a result, other projects that the DeSoto County Regional Utility Authority have in the pipeline, such as a new treatment plant on the county's west side, will benefit from the savings.

Hernando was hooked up to the Authority's eastern plant, the Short Fork Wastewater Treatment Facility, by two projects totaling about $15 million. Hemphill Construction carried out both projects.

The savings came on a $5 million contract for about six miles of 16-inch-diameter force main and two pump stations inside Hernando.

The contract called for the authority to pay less under certain circumstances, and officials said the actual construction conditions were largely better than anticipated.

The companion project was a six-mile-long gravity-flow line, ranging from two to three feet in diameter, that carries sewage from the east side of Hernando to the Short Fork plant off Laughter Road.
