Time running out for mailing Christmas packages

Hundreds of Mid South Christmas shoppers have hustled, bustled, and gotten their packages off with some time to spare.

"(It's) big burden lifted off my shoulders. It's going to get there by Christmas. All is well," Tari Smith said.

On the busiest day of the year for the United States Postal Service, the Memphis plant alone will process 1.3 million pieces of mail.

"Today probably about 3% more this year than last year still seeing a lot of mail come through," Postmaster for Memphis Tom Pawlowski said.

People tell Action News 5 they waited about ten minutes to get through the line and didn't mind a bit.

Brenda Melton mailed some Christmas cards and said she is just glad it is over.

If it's not over for you yet, don't worry. You still have time to get your gifts in the mail.

Here is a look at your deadlines:

  • For FedEx Express you need to get your gifts in the mail by Saturday but that will cost you more than ground shipping.
  • If you get to a FedEx Kinko's by eleven tonight you still have a shot at ground.
  • For UPS you're strongly encouraged to get your packages in by Friday.
  • For the United States Postal Service, your deadline for letters is Thursday. That is also the deadline for priority mail. The deadline for express mail is Saturday.

Just beware. The longer you wait the more it will cost. Glenda Glinsey paid about $11 to ship her $20 package Monday.
