August date set for man accused of killing Bolton High School teacher

A Mid-South man accused of killing his wife, a popular Bolton High School teacher, appeared in court Monday.

Jeffrey Scott appeared calm in criminal court as attorneys set an August date for his first degree murder trial.

Prosecutors argued Monday that last Thanksgiving, Scott planned the murder of his wife, Bolton High School teacher Ashley Scott.

Scott will next report to court in mid-May, so attorneys can discuss almost two dozen motions submitted by his attorney, Leslie Ballin.

"It's a very serious case," Ballin said. "The motions are filed because, in our opinion, they needed to be filed."

Among the motions, Ballin questions the admissibility of past evidence in the case, arguing the couple had a history of domestic quarrels.

Ballin also made a request for change of venue for the trial, citing an abundance of media publicity surrounding the case.

"It's tough on him," Ballin said. "He's not used to being the subject of a criminal prosecution."

Scott left the courtroom Monday surrounded by family.  He remains under house arrest at his mother's home on a $250,000 bond.
