Thompson defends campaign contribution limits, raps Romney

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) - Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson defended his support for limits on campaign contributions.

Campaigning Wednesday in Iowa, he said rival Mitt Romney had reversed his view on the issue.

The actor and former U.S. senator said limits are a valid, conservative concept that he endorses.

He blamed former President Clinton and political consultant Dick Morris for a windfall of soft money in the 1990s that corrupted the system and led to the need for reform.

Thompson said the two perfected the so-called soft money deal.
