Officer at center of West Memphis shooting resigns from department

The West Memphis police officer who shot and killed a 12-year old West Memphis boy last June resigned his position Wednesday.

In a letter to Police Chief Bob Paudert, Erik Sammis said his resignation would be effective Friday.

Sammis, a ten-year veteran of the West Memphis Police Department, found himself in a firestorm of controversy after he shot and killed 12-year-old DeAunta Farrow.

Three separate investigations later cleared Sammis of wrongdoing in the deadly shooting.
