Charges filed in alleged attack on DeSoto Co. school bus driver

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. (AP) - A DeSoto County Schools bus driver has filed documents accusing two people of attacking her at her apartment after she corrected a child on her bus.

Authorities say Cheryl Rogers, a veteran driver with the school system, was struck with fists and with a piece of pipe during the alleged attack Tuesday afternoon at her home in the Town and Country Apartments.

Southaven Police Lt. Mark Little said Rogers did not require hospitalization. She returned to work on Wednesday.

Little says officers obtained warrants for two people in connection with the beating - 31-year-old Sonya Regular, whose child was a regular rider on one of Rogers' routes, and a man who officers say went to the bus driver's apartment on Tuesday.

Regular, charged with simple assault, surrendered to police yesterday. Authorities say she was freed after posting a $650 bond.

DeSoto County Schools superintendent, Milton Kuykendall, says the district was looking into whether it could also press charges in the beating.
