Authorities working overtime to stop debit card theft ring

The DeSoto County Sheriff's department is working overtime trying to find out who is behind the multi-state credit debit card theft ring that is growing .

One woman who did not want to be identified said it happened to her.

She said by the time she figured it out, her account was negative $2700 dollars.

She said she only had $400 in the account. She is not sure how they were able to keep using the card.

Captain Jerry Owensby with the DeSoto County Sheriff's department said its not clear when the thefts started but they are concentrated in DeSoto County.

The DeSoto County Sheriff's Department has 117 cases of this crime so far, but investigators believe here are more. They said a lot of people are not reporting the thefts because the banks are covering the losses.

Investigators believe someone captured the credit and debit card numbers and then sold the numbers to people in several states.

"They're walking in with a card of some type with numbers from people who live in this area and shop in this area and use there credit cards or debit cards and buying items in other states," said Jerry Owensby of the DeSoto County Sheriff's Department.

Captain Owensby says the problem is so serious people who shop in DeSoto County should use checks or cash not credit or debit cards.
