Restaurant offers free meals to those in need

On Main Street in front of Westy's early Christmas morning, Lee Hall and hundreds of others were treated to free bar-b-que as part of a huge Christmas meal.

"They came out with the bar-b-que sauce and everything," Hall said.

It was the fifth year that Jake Schorr's Westy's Bar and Grill hosted a meal for the homeless and hungry.

"Anybody who walks up today is going to eat," Schorr said.

Much of the special Christmas dinner was prepared by volunteers from Memphis' Bar-B-Que Association, people considered experts in preparing first class meals.

"They got cabbage and green beans and corn and greens and potatoes and sweet potatoes, and they had cup cakes," Hall said.

"We're feeding them right," Schorr said. "A well balanced meal, and all the portions they want."

For Hall and many others here, it was the best Christmas gift they could receive.

"You see so many people giving time up that they could spend with their families and all, and its just amazing that they would do this much for somebody that they don't even know," Hall said.

Volunteers said their goal Tuesday was to feed 1,000 people.  Many of the same volunteers also participate in Westy's annual Thanksgiving dinner.
