$1 million state grant will help Tennessee expand free drug program

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A nonprofit organization that provides free sample medications to Tennesseans who don't have insurance will be able to expand its program with the help of a $1 million grant from the state.

The funding, which will be distributed during the next two years, will enable the Dispensary of Hope to expand from three sites to nine in Tennessee.

In addition, the dispensary will launch a new service that will allow people to receive medications through the mail.

Currently, the dispensary has distribution sites in Nashville, Murfreesboro and Knoxville. By the end of 2009, it hopes to have additional sites in Johnson City, Chattanooga, Clarksville, Centerville, Jackson and Memphis.

The mail-in pharmacy is expected to be up and running in 2008.
