New Census estimates show Tennessee growing quickly

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Tennessee's population is growing fast.

The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the state has grown by more than 8 percent since the 2000 census. That makes Tennessee the 17th-fastest growing state in the nation.

The current population of the Volunteer State is estimated to be a little over 6 million people.

The growth rate has been particularly fast since last year. Between July 2006 and July 2007, Tennessee added nearly 82,000 residents.

Much of that growth has come not from an increase in the number of babies born in the state but from migration - that is people moving here from other states or countries. The census finds Tennessee has the 12th fastest migration growth.
