The Liberty Bowl has been pretty lucky with some good matchups over the past few years. PLUS some side shows that are just as interesting as is who wins or loses. The annual Liberty Bowl luncheon drew a huge crowd Thursday afternoon at the East Memphis Hilton. And of course, the big media crush was on UCF running back Kevin Smith. He is quietly knocking on the door of the single season NCAA rushing record. Smith has averaged 188 yards per game this season. 181 yards Saturday against Mississippi State and he'll pass Barry Sanders for the all-time single season record with over 2,600 hundred.
Smith down-played the possibility. "I'm not gonna come out and say I'm going to break the record. When you guys leave the room I won't even be thinking about it, trust me. If I get 50 yards and we beat Mississippi State, I'm the happiest man in the world."
Wide receiver Rocky Ross feels he's as good as they get.
"I think he's flown under the radar because of our conference. But he's a first team all-american. He's legit."
The Liberty Bowl also announced two long term deals with ESPN as the network host of the game and AutoZone as its title sponsor. Both are 5-year extensions of their current contracts.
