Search called off for deputy shooting suspect

Sheriff's Deputies in DeSoto County spent most of Thursday night looking for the two men responsible for shooting Deputy John Staggs. Early Friday morning, they called off the search.

Deputies followed up on tips Thursday night on where the two suspects might be. They searched on foot and with K-9's, but came up empty handed.

"We know there's a vehicle involved so we felt there was nobody out there on foot at the time. We had searched every area that we could," Chief Steve Atkinson of the DeSoto County Sheriff's Department said.

It doesn't mean they've stopped looking.

Atkinson says it's been frustrating because they have so little information about the suspects.

Meanwhile, Deputy John Staggs is back home from the hospital.

He spent Friday talking with investigators.

Staggs, who's been with the department less than  three years, was shot three times including once in the chest.

The protective vest Staggs was wearing likely saved his life.

"A lot of officers don't wear them because they're uncomfortable and hot.  We're constantly preaching to our officers to wear them and he wore his everyday," Atkinson said.

Atkinson describes Staggs as an excellent deputy and says he has the respect of his fellow officers.

"Last night when the call went out you could hear officers respond from the house that weren't even on duty.  That shows you right there what other deputies thought of him," Atkinson said.

Atkinson says it's possible the car driven by the suspects has bullet holes on the trunk because Staggs got a few shots off and hit their car.
