New York City prepares for New Year's Eve spectacular

New York City prepared for its annual New Year's Eve celebration Monday amid tight security.

The annual ball drop, witnessed by hundreds of thousands of revelers, is a century-old tradition in the Big Apple that is celebrated around the world.

Monday, trash cans were removed from street corners to make extra room for party-goers, who will pass through checkpoints before they are allowed into Times Square.

Last week, workers also rushed to get the famous ball ready for its big moment, installing 672 new, double-cut Waterford Crystal triangles for its 100th drop.

The crystal-adorned sphere promises to be twice as bright as last year's, and along with new state of the art LED bulbs, the ball drop will also be the greenest, or most energy efficient.

Weather for this New Year's Eve in New York City calls for temperatures in the 30's.
