Mid-South deputy shoots and kills man

A shooting scene is not a common site along Byhalia Road in Barton, Mississippi.

Gunfire is not a common sound.

But multiple shots heard coming from a mobile home Monday led neighbors to call 911.

"I heard maybe nine shots out of all of it," Vernon McElhaney said.

A Marshall County Sheriff's deputy responding to the call said he had to use deadly force after 34 year-old Bailey Pearson bolted from the front door holding a gun.

"Which he raised and pointed toward the officer" said Sheriff Kenny Dickerson. "He refused to drop the weapon and the officer shot him.

The sheriff is certain Pearson meant harm.  He said the mobile home is riddled with bullet holes after a day and a half of bizarre behavior.

"The mobile home's been demolished," said Dickerson.  "The TV's been shot, there's holes in the walls, glass broken everywhere, spent casings everywhere," he added.

Pearson may have even shot himself in the arm before the deputy arrived.

A woman who was staying in the mobile home with Pearson was not hurt.

Neighbors are glad no one else was hurt.

"I live next door and my wife could have been shot," said McElhaney. "He could have got on the front porch and shot my wife."

The deputy who shot and killed Bailey Pearson is on paid suspension until the investigation is complete.

Turns out, Pearson was wanted for a probation violation.

An autopsy will determine if he was on drugs or medication at the time of his death.
