UPDATE: Two children die in overnight apartment fire; mother charged

The mother of two Memphis children who were killed in an overnight house fire has been charged with reckless homicide in their deaths.

Aundria Jones, 29, told investigators she left her children alone at home while she went out on New Years Eve.

The fire broke out around 2:00 a.m. in the Alden Gate Condominiums, near Mendenhall and Knight-Arnold in Memphis.

Firefighters were able to knock down the flames quickly, leaving the building standing, but a haunting scene inside.

In a bedroom and in a bathroom, firefighters found a four-year-old boy and a seven-year-old boy. The boys were transported to St. Francis Hospital, where they later died.

Memphis Fire investigators have not yet determined what caused the fire.

"Unfortunately, right now, we don't have an exact cause," Lt. Keith Staples of the Memphis Fire Department said.

Nearby residents said Jones left the boys alone at home often enough that they had threatened to call police.

A court date for Jones has not yet been set.
