Damage to fiber line causes outage for Comcast subscribers in Memphis

A damaged fiber line led to outages Tuesday for Comcast cable and internet subscribers in Memphis.

Comcast spokesperson Otha Brandon said a random shooting damaged one of the company's primary fiber runs. A fiber run, Brandon said, carries broadcast signals from the cable operator to a customer's home.

Though Brandon was not certain, Comcast suspects the shooter could have been a New Year's Eve reveler who shot up in towards the sky.

Brandon would not reveal the location of the fiber run, but did say it was in the Lamar Avenue corridor.

The outage affected internet and cable customers across Memphis, Germantown and Collierville.

Brandon said the shooting happened around 5:00 a.m. Tuesday. An equipment monitoring device immediately alerted Comcast something was wrong. Technicians were called in to temporarily fix the problem, which was done by noon.

"The first thing we want to do is at least provide a temporary solution so that we can get people signals.  We understand that there are a lot of people who are at home today watching football," Brandon said.

Brandon said about 20,000 people in all were affected by the outage.

Comcast will work to replace the damaged equipment without interrupting service, Brandon said.
