Horn Lake to fight Walls proposed annexation

HORN LAKE, Miss. (AP) - Horn Lake officials say they plan to fight an annexation plan by the town of Walls.

Horn Lake officials are against the annexation because it would include about 1,300 acres east of U.S. Highway 61 which they say infringes on their planned area of growth.

Walls Mayor Nat Baker said the land east of the highway has been listed in long-range Horn Lake plans for about a decade.

Aldermen voted this week to hire a law firm to represent the city in the annexation case.       Horn Lake City Attorney Billy Campbell Junior said the lack of municipal services provided by Walls should make any annexation difficult.

A city's ability to provide municipal services to a proposed annex area is among criteria the courts use to determine if an annexation can proceed.

Another factor is whether the annexation infringes on another municipality's path of growth.

The Walls board of aldermen approved the annexation plan on December 20th.
