Citizens react to officer that shot himself

Residents at the Lakeview Trailer Park in DeSoto County  near Walls watched as officers combed the area looking for two gunmen who shot a Sheriff's Deputy.

The idea of  gunmen on the loose frightened residents.

"Somebody shot somebody. I was afraid. I didn't really ant to be outside they were in my trailer park," resident Harley Fletcher said. "People were freaking out. They were probably around here."

That fear turned to anger after they learned DeSoto County Sheriff's deputy John Staggs shot himself in the shoulder and arm.

"That's messed up. They were wasting their time. There is a lot of stuff going on. They were trying to find someone who shot themselves," resident Eva Lopez said.

Staggs told investigators he was watching this store on the property when he was attacked.

"When I came in to work I was told by my girlfriend he had no longer been shot. He shot himself. I was stunned," store employee Kenneth Brewer said.

Brewer says it makes him angry.

"I'm a little upset that for him doing that cost so many tax dollars and tying up man power in the police department," Brewer said.

The DeSoto County Sheriff's Department said it does not know how much the search for the imaginary gunmen cost and they do not plan to calculate it.

The Shelby County Sheriff's Department says it's officers were put on alert only.

The Tunica County Sheriff's Department did set up a roadblock. But only 12 officers were used and it lasted only a couple of hours.
