Spears hospitalized after latest episode

Smiling and chatting bewilderedly, Britney Spears was whisked away by ambulance from her home late Thursday night.

The Los Angeles Police Department says officers were called out around 8 o'clock p.m. to her mansion near Beverly Hills to help resolve a custody dispute involving the pop star, her ex-husband Kevin Federline and their two young sons.

After nearly three hours, the children were handed over to Federline and Spears was put on a gurney. With at least six firefighters accompanying her, she was wheeled into the ambulance and hospitalized overnight under police orders.

"People with problems like this...what you find is that there's a dual diagnosis. Not only do they have multiple substance addiction, but they also have either a bipolar or a manic diagnosis...and that is a mental illness," psychologist Dr. Diana Kirschner said.

Police say Spears was being detained and evaluated because officers found her under the influence of an unknown substance. No one was injured. US Magazine reports that her one year old son Jayden James was also hospitalized for an unknown reason. He was later released. The magazine also reports that the incident started when Spears refused to turn over the children per custody arrangements.

Earlier Thursday, Spears appeared in court for a deposition in the custody case. Attorneys for both sides attended another court hearing Friday, but declined comment.
