Sea of blue salutes fallen trooper

The blue lights created a sorrowful glow over the final route Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Calvin Jenks took exactly one year ago Sunday.

On January 6th 2007, Jenks left the Criminal Justice Complex after dropping off a person he had arrested earlier in the day.

The 24-year old then traveled along Highway 59 to Highway 14.

A lone THP cruiser marked the spot where Jenks pulled over a speeder and was shot and killed.

The return to this spot was difficult for Jenks' wife Sarah. It was only her second time to the scene.

"Just to think about what happened on this day last year, it's sad to think you see the tire mark right there, and this is where it happened," Jenks said.

The two were married only four months before Jenks was killed.

"He would be in awe of all this, he was a very simple person and appreciated everything anyone ever did for him, and I think he would be so thrilled and honored by all of this," Jenks said.

Sarah Jenks hopes the memorial to her husband will remind people of the risk law enforcement officers take every day they step into a patrol car.

"We should treat them with respect and appreciate them.  Look at what Calvin did to enforce the law, look at what he gave up," Jenks said.
