After suffering through what can only be described as a miserable year defensively, Tommy West had to make a change. He fired Rick Kravitz last week as defensive coordinator and Monday hired the guy he wanted all along last year in 36-year-old Tim Walton.
West introduced Walton to the media Monday. Walton's defense ranked 33rd in the nation last year at Miami. Compare that to the Tigers defense, that was ranked 100th last season.
A former Tiger assistant under West in 2000 and 2001, Walton is a defensive back specialist. Something the Memphis defense needs desperately after giving up over 50 points on 3 different occasions this year.
The Tigers finished the season 7-6 after giving up 44 points in the New Orleans Bowl and losing to Florida Atlantic.
