Greg Davis announces run for Congress

In Southaven City Hall, his picture hangs on the wall. His placard reads mayor. But his volunteers prepped campaign signs for a totally separate election as Southaven Mayor Greg Davis officially announced that he's running for United States Congress.

"We want to do for the first congressional district what we've done here for Southaven which is promote the economy growth. Have less government so to speak, cut the governmental beaureaucratic red tape," Davis said.

The first congressional district covers the Northeastern corner of Mississippi and most of North Mississippi as a whole.

The population is estimated at more than 792,000.

Until he was appointed to the U-S Senate, Roger Wicker represented the district.

His vacant seat is now drawing widespread interest.

Internet Washington Watchers estimate as many as 11 potential candidates including former Governor Ronnie Musgrove. Glen McCullough also threw his name into the ring. So has Prentiss County Chancery Clerk Travis Childers.

And while Southaven mayor Greg Davis has already started campaigning, the deadline to qualify for the race is January 11th.
