New legislative session begins without Ophelia Ford

The gavel went down starting the new legislative session for the year with state senator Ophelia Ford not present.
"We really need to to find out is she is physically able to come back. We would all like to know that," Senator Beverly Marrero said.

Senator Jim Kyle agreed.

"She needs to come forward and tell us what her prognosis is and we'll go forward from there," Kyle said.

We do know that Ford's attorney sent this letter to Lt. Governor Ron Ramsey saying she is in the hospital and will be for the next few weeks. Ford wants Ramsey to put someone else on her committees.

"We realize she'll be back at some time. No need to change her committees knowing in a few weeks we'll be switching those back," Ramsey said.

If Ford's constituents want to at least talk with someone on the phone, they are out of luck. There is no one in her Senate office.

Some of her constituents are also getting worried about their representation in District 29.

"We need somebody who is going to be there and if she is not we need someone who is going to be there and be effective. If she's not going to be effective we need someone to step in and take her position," constituent Cindy Bailey Ford said.

The state legislature has no authority to remove a sitting senator. The only way Ophelia Ford will be replaced is if she resigns And there is no indication that the senator plans to step down.
