Daycare bus overturns during crash

A mother tightly embraced her six year-old son.  He was on board a day-care bus when witnesses say it was "t-boned" by a pick-up truck at the intersection of Hodge Road and Byron in Whitehaven Thursday.

"Looked like he just ran the stop sign," said witness Dexter Moody.

Moody witnessed the wreck from his brother's front yard.

"Me and brother ran over there to make sure it wouldn't catch fire 'cause there was smoke coming out from the wheel and everything," said Moody.

He says the bus driver was unconscious and they worked to free her, a monitor, and the little boy from the overturned bus.

"I'd be terrified," said one parent on the scene.

Many parents were terrified until they found out the bus had only one child on board.

"But anything can happen anytime," said another parent.

We're told the bus would have been a lot more crowded at most any other time.

"If they had kids on the passenger side it probably would have thrown them against the glass and hurt them real bad," said Moody.

The day-care owner is thankful that didn't happen and that his driver is apparently not at fault.

"Contrary to what you hear about day cares all the time in the news, we have a new bus, we were all strapped in, and we were doing the right thing," Rubin Campbell of Campbell's Learning Center told us.

The driver of the pick-up truck may be another question.  He sat in a police squad car as the investigation began.      He was not charged on the scene.

At last check, the bus driver was still under observation at The MED.  The bus monitor and the child were both at home.
