FBI investigates businesses headed by Herenton associates

A letter was sent by the FBI to the city attorney's office requesting copies of contracts between the city and several businesses. Two of the companies are headed by long time associates of Mayor Willie Herenton.

One of the companies is E.W. Moon, Inc. It is headed by E.W. Moon. He lives in California, but has a building here in Memphis.

Moon, a life long friend of Herenton, had road design contracts worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

One of the other contracts the FBI is looking into is with Integrate Technologies, a computer consulting firm owned by Reginald French who had been paid  more than a million dollars for city computer contracts.

Citizen Watchdog Joe Saino said many of the contracts the FBI are looking at cost taxpayers more than they should have.

"The ACS contract was a scheme to award minority contracts to the friends of the mayor without anybody being able to check it," Saino said.

The FBI wants contracts with seven companies that did business with the city.

The letter is signed by Howard S. Marshall, supervisory agent in charge.

Action News 5 tried to talk with the Mayor about the FBI probe. We were told he was unavailable to comment.
