Benton County mayor criticized for animal shelter deaths

CAMDEN, Tenn. (AP) - Protesters are pointing the blame at the county mayor after a dozen dogs were found dead at the Benton County Animal Shelter.

Police said more than 60 animals were still alive in the shelter when they were found Friday. But 25 puppies had exposure to disease and malnutrition, and had to be euthanized.

Mayor Jimmy Wiseman was in charge Friday when the shelter was discovered.

Dozens of protesters voiced their anger outside Wiseman's office Monday. They said they want someone to pay for the animals' deaths.

The mayor said the accusations are a personal attack by a small group of people who want the shelter removed from his control.

Police said they are considering charges employees, including the mayor.
