Child struck, killed at Jonesboro elementary school

JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) - A six-year-old kindergartner arriving at Fox Meadow Elementary School in Jonesboro died after he was pulled under a car, driven by his mother.

Police identified the child as Tavien Epley, and said they did not anticipate charges would be filed against the driver.

Nettleton School District Assistant Superintendent Bob Casteel said the accident happened about 8 a.m. in front of the school entrance.

Police said the child was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead just before 11 a.m.

Casteel said the parent thought the child was clear of the vehicle when she pulled the car away.

Police Captain Lynn Waterworth said "the child was being dropped off at school and was somehow pulled under the vehicle as it started to drive away."

The school district said in a statement on its Web site that crisis team members helped classroom teachers tell students about the accident.

Additional trained personnel also will be on campus to help over the next few days.
