Bartlett Mayor sends letter to citizens opposing consolidation

Bartlett Mayor Keith McDonald says consolidation talks sent a panic through his city.

"We wanted to calm those fears because we have people saying 'should we go ahead and put our houses up for sale?  Because if Memphis is going to have it our property values are going to go down," McDonald said.

His office answered a surge of questions. And his answers were firm.

"We're going to still be Bartlett and we're still going to manage things the way we are today and Memphis just can't impose their will on us," McDonald said.

So Mayor McDonald sent a position letter to Bartlett residents explaining Bartlett has it's own charter with the state and cannot consolidate with Memphis without a vote.

McDonald isn't the only leader perking his ears.

"Any bill that's passed that would effect Shelby County would effect areas other localities in the state, other urban areas, and that means more problems in the legislature," political analyst Jackson Baker said.

Baker said the issue opened more than a can of worms.

"Pandora's Box. They've opened something up and it's going to swirl up and there's going to be a lot of discord for a while," Baker said.

Mayor McDonald says he hopes for open dialogue between all the mayors of Memphis and Shelby County.
