MY TURN: Remembering the man who inspired millions

Make it a day on, not a day off. That's the word from the federal agency charged by Congress with making the Martin Luther King Holiday a national day of service.

Participation in the King Day of Service has grown quite a bit over the last decade, with hundreds of thousands of Americans participating in projects such as mentoring children, delivering meals and renovating schools and senior centers.

People who want to volunteer on King Day are asked to visit the website www.mlkday.gov to find local opportunities. If you go to that website, you will find volunteer activities throughout the Mid-South. It’s a living tribute to the man who inspired millions.

Dr. King challenged all of us to serve by his actions and by his rhetoric. Consider this powerful quote from him: "Life’s most persistent and urgent question is 'What are you doing to help others?'" Monday, you have an easy way to answer that one.

That’s my turn. Now it’s your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email yourturn@wmctv.com or call 800-465-1210.
