Shelby County Mayor clamps down with new building policy

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Shelby County Mayor A C Wharton says county property will not be used for private events like birthdays and weddings anymore.

Wharton came up with what he calls a "straightforward" policy after debate in December about whether an elected official could host a Kwanzaa celebration in the county's administration building.

Wharton says even Forrest Gump could understand the new policy, which states that county buildings can only be used for county purposes.

That includes government meetings, county-sanctioned charitable events, retirement parties and secular holiday gatherings for employees.
