Red light cameras coming to Southaven

A manufacturer of red light cameras and the Mississippi Department of Transportation will meet later this month to negotiate a plan to add red light cameras in Southaven.

Southaven and Tupelo are currently signed up for red light camera systems.

At the meeting, the two sides will discuss liability, and how to mount the cameras without using the signal's electricity.

Red light cameras capture images of motorists as they pass through an intersection with a red light.  Law enforcement agencies typically use the license plate number of the car captured in a camera's image to track down the vehicle's owner.  That person is then issued a ticket for running the light.

Locally, the cameras have been in use in Germantown, Tennessee for several years.

Earlier this week, a lawyer who was ticketed through Knoxville's red light camera enforcement program wants asked for an injunction to stop that city from continuing its program.
