Co-workers remember paramedic killed in accident

The workforce at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Tipton County is accustomed to caring for the sick and dying. They are now struggling with the unlikely and sudden death of a co-worker.

"It's a very somber day around the hospital. Anytime we have such a tragedy, it's a very difficult thing to cope with," hospital administrator Paul Betz said.

Tuesday evening, in Midtown Memphis, Baptist Memorial paramedic Darren Greenway was driving his pick-up truck near Walker and McLean. He was killed when a gray car slammed into his truck. Suspicious the driver was drunk, Memphis police had tried to pull over the gray car moments earlier. But the car took off, eventually hitting and killing Greenway.

Back at the hospital, a white wreath hangs on the ambulance garage door as a reminder of someone co-workers say no one will forget.

"Darren was a gentleman that was very liked by his co-workers. Someone who always put his patients first and always went above and beyond for his patients and his patients families as well," Betz said.

The driver of the gray car, Marcus Montgomery, later died at the hospital.

Memphis police said the car was stolen.
