Mayor Herenton among 50 finalists in World Mayor 2008 contest

People worldwide now have an opportunity to rate the job of Memphis' longest serving Mayor.

The World Mayor website, located at www.worldmayor.com, has included Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton as one of 50 finalists in its "World Mayor 2008" contest.

According to the website, Herenton is one of 50 finalists selected from an initial pool of more than 820 mayors around the world, nominated by more than 100,000.

Herenton joins the mayors of cities including Cape Town, Los Angeles, Zurich and more.

The World Mayor website says it, "aims to show what outstanding mayors can achieve as well as raise their profiles nationally and internationally. It honours those who have served their communities selflessly and courageously and who have made significant contributions to the well-being of cities."

According to the website, the winning mayor will be selected "based on the number of votes mayors receive and the persuasiveness and passion of supporting arguments."

The website does not say when voting ends.  To find out more, click here.
