Shotgun wielding robbers target Rhodes College area

A man we'll call "Jim" no longer walks his dog after dark.

"I've lived here almost two years and never had a problem, until now," he said.

Three men, one of them armed with a sawed-off shotgun, robbed Jim around 7:30 one night.

"I thought I was about to get shot," said Jim.

Two others in his neighborhood have also been robbed.  The intersection of University and Lyndale is where it happened to Jim.  That's just across the street from Rhodes College.

"We're aware of it," said Rhodes sophomore Janie Logan.

She also baby-sits in the neighborhood.

"I just make sure I go out well before it starts getting dark and just walk this busy road," said Logan as she points to University Avenue.

The college sent an E-mail to students, faculty, and staff warning them of the robberies.  In it, the director of campus safety writes "the suspects seem to be targeting people walking their dogs or exercising alone in the nighttime hours."  He encourages people to "be cautious and walk with others whenever possible."

Logan has yet to tell her parents.

"They're worried enough as it is," she said.

"Give me your money, give me your money!" recalled Jim.

That's what one the crooks yelled at him.

"I kept waiting for him to say "hey, this guy can ID us--shoot him!" he recalled.

Jim has already met with police to try and identify the thieves who turned his nightly walk into a nightmare.

According to police reports, all three suspects wore hoods and sounded like teenagers.  One of them appeared to be heavier than the other two.  If you know anything about these Rhodes-area robbers, call CrimeStoppers at 901-528-CASH.
