"I mean, being a parent, you want the best for your child...the best possible," parent Tim Stroud said.

And parents that showed up Thursday thought the best was getting their child into an optional school, and its special mix of college-prep teaching methods.

"It takes them to a whole another world. They learn more," parent Laquett Robinson said.

School officials said giving parents a numbered place in line helps prevent the long waits that have been so troublesome in the past.

"In the past people slept here. Years ago people stood in line for hours and hours," optional schools official Linda Sklar said.

District officials said if parents can't make it Friday, there will still be plenty of chances for their children.

"We encourage people to apply tomorrow, but please understand that we want them to come next Monday, Wednesday, Tuesday, and Thursday. All the way to when school starts, there are still opportunities," Sklar said.

If you picked up a number today, you will only be able to use it between 6:30 am and noon tomorrow.

After that, applications will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis.
