Woman who crashed through U of M parking garage suing

One year ago a driver went through the concrete wall and off the top floor of the University of Memphis parking garage. Now, the woman that was behind the wheel is suing.

In the lawsuit, Maureen Fitzgerald claims a seizure and a resulting black-out led her to drive off the parking garage- a garage she says should have been better built.

The garage's architects, builders, inspectors, and the Tennessee Board of Regents are named in the suit.

Fitzgerald blames shoddy construction for not keeping her from running over the edge. However, an investigation by the Tennessee Highway Patrol found no fault with the garage.

Troopers failed to determine why Fitzgerald took the plunge. Their states that Fitzgerald never hit the brakes.

Fitzgerald claims the accident caused brain injuries and permanent disability.

Friday, Action News 5 contacted the university, the construction company, and the architects. None have received official notice of the lawsuit. Therefore, none of them had any comment.
