Worker rescued after being trapped underground in Fayette County

The second of two constuction workers trapped underground in Fayette County was rescued late Friday evening.

Two construction workers first became trapped underground Friday afternoon near the intersection of Wade Drive and Highway 194 in Fayette County, TN.

The men became stuck around 3 o'clock friday afternoon they and two others  worked to install a water main for a new subdivision.  Officials said the men were as many as 25 feet beneath the surface when the walls suddenly collapsed, trapping two of them.

While one man was rescued immediately, crews from Fayette County and surrounding areas worked to rescue the second as the threat of hypothermia set it.  The victim was given oxygen, keeping him alert, as rescuers ed everything from backhoes to bare hands to finally, carefully, free him.

The man buried in the mud all day was identified as 22-year-old Antonio Sandoval.  His cousin was the other worker who was trapped for a time.

Both are being treated at The MED.

As they recover, work is already underway to determine how the accident happened and why the walls of trench caved in.
