Dozens of dogs seized from Shelby County home

Dozens of dogs were seized from a Shelby County home Friday morning when the health department busted a puppy mill.

"We were notified by the Memphis Humane Society that there was a problem and that's why we came out to conduct an investigation," L.C. Garth of Vector Control said.

More than 60 animals were found behind a house on Walsh Road.  Puppies and pregnant dogs were cooped up with no way to escape the below-freezing temperatures.

"The owner did surrender the animals which is really good for the animals and it helps the owner she was overwhelmed," Nina Wingfield of the Collierville Animal Shelter said.

Agencies from all over Shelby County came to the rescue after a tip was phoned into the Memphis Humane Society, and a warrant was issued for homeowner Patricia Kinney.

Officials said some of the animals were moved after health inspectors went to check out the property two days ago.

The animals were taken to various shelters where they will be examined by a veterinarian.

Those in the poorest health will have to be euthanized.
