Dexter Cox, 18, faced a judge Monday on charges he murdered Lt. Ed Vidulich, 28-year veteran of the Memphis Police Department.

At a news conference on Sunday, Larry Godwin said Memphis will not stand for this type of violence.

"If a person is allowed to carry out this type of violence against one sworn to protect, the community the citizens do not stand a chance," Godwin said.

One week ago, Memphis police officers arrived at the scene of a car fire only to learn the car was registered to Lt. Ed Vidulich.

When officers arrived at Vidulich's home, they found him dead from gunshot wounds.  The discovery sparked a fierce manhunt that eventually lead to Cox's arrest.

The 51-year-old Vidulich was survived by his mother, daughter, and wife, Gayle.

"He's right here at my heart," Gayle Vidulich said after Sunday's press conference.

Wednesday, police arrested Cox near Frayser High School after he was found with a gun near the school. A court affidavit says was the same gun taken from Vidulich's home when he was shot to death.

After his arrest for having the weapon, police connected Cox to Vidulich's murder through interviews.

Saturday, the Memphis Police confirmed an arrest had been made in Vidulich's murder.

While Godwin credited the arrest to good police work, Gayle Vidulich was simply glad her husband's alleged killer was in custody.

"All I could do was thank God and everyone here at the PD," she said.
