Industrial parks, residential areas damaged in Southaven

SOUTHAVEN, MS (WMC-TV) - The clouds Tuesday afternoon looked ominous over the skies of Southaven, promising something bad.

After the storm, most of the damage in Southaven was centered inside an area in a mile radius of Stateline Road and Airways Boulevard.

A warehouse there was almost completely destroyed.  Eighteen-wheelers, once parked outside, were blown inside the building, landing upside down.

Kevin Johnson was inside the warehouse, along with several other people, when the wind hit.

"All of a sudden, the doors started rattling," he said. "Next thing I know, the doors shook. All I could do is dunk and dodge. It scared me. I saw the roof come off the building...just pulled back."

Remarkably only one employee was injured, suffering a broken arm.

Law enforcement quickly blocked traffic because power lines were down in the street.

About a half a mile away in an industrial park, there was even more damage, with walls and roofs gone, exposing what was the warehouse.  Debris was everywhere, with tractor trailers turned over.

In a nearby neighborhood, Callie Hembree ran for cover after watching Action News 5's weather coverage.

"I went in the hall with the baby and daughter and we got underneath blankets and we prayed," she said.

Fortunately, they rode it out, and everybody was fine, despite the large trees that landed on her house.

Wednesday morning, residents of Southaven prepared to assess the damage, and moved forward with clean-up efforts.
