Memphis electrical substation needs complete rebuild

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Damage to an electrical substation and other electrical infrastructure in a Memphis neighborhood was so severe that it could take weeks to rebuild.

Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division's president and CEO Jerry Collins says it could take three weeks to fully restore power in the Hickory Hill area, the hardest hit part of the city.

About 64,000 homes and businesses were without power at some point Tuesday. By the following night, nearly 400 workers were on the job, trying to restore power to about 8,500 customers who remained without electricity.

That included workers from Nashville, Chattanooga, Springfield, Mo., and Tulsa, Okla.

The utility had just completed another massive restoration.

A windstorm on Jan. 29 knocked out service to nearly 60,000 customers. It took four days to repair.
