MY TURN: Be prepared

WMC-TV General Manager Lee Meredith WMC-TV General Manager Lee Meredith

You don’t have to see too many pictures of the aftermath of Tuesday’s tornadoes before you realize what a miracle it is that more people were not killed or seriously injured. Our thoughts and prayers do go out to the families of those who died or were hurt.

There were many heroes in Tuesday’s event – the first responders and the weather forecasters come to mind immediately, but I would also like to single out the people who made it their mission to be better prepared for severe weather emergencies.

This was extremely evident on the campus of Union University in Jackson, Tennessee. Each dorm room was required to have the tornado emergency procedures posted, and it’s obvious most of the students followed those procedures.

As we breathe a sigh of relief that the loss of life was not worse, we should not forget that many of our neighbors suffered major losses.

WMC-TV5 is partnering with the American Red Cross and Kroger for the Action News 5 Helping Neighbors Donation Drive. Please join us in taking this opportunity to help people hurt by these storms and other disasters by going to our website or to a Kroger store to make a donation.

That’s my turn. Now it’s your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email yourturn@wmctv.com or call 800-465-1210.
