Thieves strike storm-ravaged Mid-South neighborhood

Televisions, especially high definition flat screens, are a hot ticket item thieves.

Sandi Bellanti of Arlington recently had her brand new flat-screen stolen, and she thinks crooks targeted her house because she lives in a storm damaged area.

Bellanti lives off Stewart Road and 385, on a street that has been in the news as one of the areas hit by Tuesday night's storm.  She said her television was stolen despite the alarm system going off.

According to Bellanti, a witness actually saw two men leaving her house. The witness tried to write down the license plate of the car, but the plate was covered up.
"Tornadoes did hit about a 100 yards from our home and there was a lot of people without power for 24-hours or so, and the school was closed out there, and I think people knew that and targeted my home and my area," Bellanti said.

A crime-track of the area of 385 and Stewart Road found this is the first incident within a 1-mile radius in the last 30-days.

Steve Shular with the Shelby County Sheriff's Department does not necessarily think the Bellanti's were targeted because they live in a storm damaged area.

He said it could have been a random act.

Late Thursday afternoon, two men were arrested for stealing Bellanti's  television. Police said they are responsible for hitting homes in Millington and Tipton County.
