Suspect in police standoff found dead in apartment

Action News 5 was there as tactical officers with big weapons began their waiting game with a shooting suspect.

A little more than four hours later, the stand-off was over.

"TACT unit made entry and now that subject is DOA," Monique Martin of the Memphis police department said.

The suspect apparently took his own life. Perhaps even before officers arrived.

There was no one else in the apartment despite earlier information the suspect may have had a hostage.

Smoke grenades were used to get into the apartment after attempts to communicate with the suspect failed.

Police went to all this trouble because the suspect was wanted for shooting another man at the nearby Memphis Inn.

He was considered armed and very dangerous.

As police waited, residents wondered. Kept away from surrounding apartments.

Others, like Kimberly Burnett's sister and baby niece, couldn't leave.

"She said she couldn't get out and we're worried about her," Burnett said.

Police said there is a reason they take their time in these types of situations.

"We don't want to put the public at risk. We don't want to put our officers at risk," Martin said.

They were glad this case was closed without anyone else getting hurt.

They are sorry the suspect did not just surrender.
