Storm victims wonder where the mayor is

Linda Jones wanted to know why she hasn't seen Mayor Willie Herenton tour the damage in her Hickory Hill neighborhood.

"Everyone is talking about it.  Everyone," Jones said.

In the comment section of the paper today, one Collierville resident jests "you can come out now Mayor" saying "it's safe to leave the inner room."

"We got him in office and even if he...just something...he could have just came out and said 'as your mayor, I am aware of the situation you guys are in'," Jones said.
Jones said Wednesday's news conference was not enough. Residents want to see the city's top leader in person.

Herenton's spokesperson, Toni Holmon-Turner, said he did tour the Hickory Hill area Wednesday. But he didn't publicize it.

"He's extremely concerned about the devastation that has taken place here in Memphis," Turner said.

She said Herenton is working around the clock.

"He is a mayor that's making sure that he's exhausted all resources to give the division directors what they need.  I mean, they're in constant contact morning, noon and night," Turner said.

As Jones and her family take shifts watching for looters, she hopes she will get all the support she can get.
